Could math get more exciting?I got a hot tip on a math tournament program from some of my first online fans! Math Fights is an online tournament style game for junior level students and beyond. You fight online with other mathletes from around the world in order to win virtual gold. Does this sound more than a little bit nerdy to you? Well it is!

Peace, AUSTRALIAN styleThis past winter I took a course on spirituality in education. The professor, John Miller is an expert in holistic education. As teachers we can tend to focus only student academics and only manage behaviours when they become disruptive. Holistic education, asks us to look at the whole child. It requires teachers to care and nurture students emotions, well-being, passions as well as their academic achievements. Taking care of a student's emotional well-being will often result in a happier classroom. WIth students acting more responsibly and with increased focus. Teaching meditation is one way to help to nurture your student's well-being, and I think there just might be a free app for that.
a touch of classAs Google's reach continues to grow, I'm finding it hard to dislike any of their educational programs. I'd never heard of Google Arts and Culture before. How long has this program existed? I have my background in visual art but I find it hard to marry art with the growing technological trends happening in my class. This program might help bridge the gap.
my replacement has arrivedIn the spring, my learning coach told me about Khan Academy. I nodded as he mentioned it. He had just suggested about 10 books and 20 other programs in rapid succession. It was June, and my listening skills were not firing at all cylinders. Now that I have time over the summer, and I've recently become a blogging machine, I've decided to have a look.
math it up!For the next few entries, I want to focus on Math applications. I'm desperately trying to tear my students away from their textbooks. The ones we have in our class are from the mid-nineties. They still have money questions with pennies and word problems about buying DVDs.
At the same time, I think that it's very important that students have the opportunity to practice the math concepts we learn together numerous times to make sure that they're able to internalize the processes. puzzling to eternityWow, I can't believe it, a video game just pulled me in and kept my attention for over 3 hours. If my wife hadn't just come home from work there is no doubt I would still be playing The Witness.
i've got a bad case of the shakesFeeling good about my recent success with Pikochart, I thought I would try another graphic design program.
This one, Easel.ly seems to be specifically geared towards making infographics. I love infographics, perhaps this could work alongside the programs like Pikochart and Canva that I'm already familiar with. world class designersLast year my class and I started using CANVA, it's a great graphic design tool. It has a free feature, but you can upgrade it if you need to. As a class, we created amazing infographics about energy conservation. In an attempt to create more choice and be more constructivist in my class, I want to provide more options for my students. I also have a background in design, so whenever I can fiddle with a new design program, I'm a happy guy.
the brains of this operationCoding has something I've heard teachers talking a lot about for the past couple of years. Should we all be teaching code? It isn't in the curriculum and it seems overly complicated. I enjoy navigating the internet, but do I really need to look behind the curtain? Is coding really as exciting as people are trying to make it out to be? I am reticent about this one. I know that many of my students would love it, but how am I going to find the time to fit it in?
Going on a journey outside the 6For today's program, I have chosen Classroom Bridges. It was recommended to me by a colleague in an online course. I have never met this person in real life, but the University of Toronto thinks their alright, so I think I will go for it.
